Hearing God's Quiet Call

It was in the early nineteen nineties when Dorene first felt a desire to make Rosaries. She and her family were living in Germany where her husband, Ed, was stationed with the Air Force. She met a Catholic woman who had several young children and time to make Rosaries. Although Dorene was interested, she saw her two children as road blocks to making any herself. The woman was running a group to teach others to make Rosaries but Doreen never even attended the class. It took nearly a decade to answer God’s call. Now, Dorene volunteers her time and shares her faith to bring people closer to Jesus through her gifts of Rosaries.

Dorene was baptized Catholic and even attended a Catholic school until the 4th grade. She never learned what happened but by the 5th grade, she was enrolled in a public school and began attending a Baptist church and Sunday School with her aunt and uncle. It wasn’t until she met her husband, Ed, and became engaged that she returned to the Catholic faith. Ed’s family had recited the Rosary together each night. He wanted a Catholic wedding and to raise his family as Catholics. At that time, Doreen didn’t see much of a difference in the two religions and didn’t really care which church she attended. She completed her sacraments of initiation by being confirmed.  She and Ed could then be married.  Doreen, although faithful, had no idea our Lord was calling her to evangelize the Catholic faith.

Slowly, Dorene’s conviction to being a Catholic grew. The woman, who created Rosaries in Germany, left a lasting impression on Dorene.  The faith of Ed’s family, and finally, her current church family in Riverview, Florida all acted as catalysts for a deeper conversion into her religion and a closer walk with Jesus. Dorene’s desire to create Rosaries grew until one day her sister-in-law came to visit. She had learned how to make Rosaries and passed the information on to Doreen and her daughter.

From that point on, Dorene has been making Rosaries. At first she met in her church and taught others to make them as well. Now she works out of her home. Each Thursday, she invites women into her home to work in communion.  Sometimes only one woman comes to help. Other times there are as many as five ladies. Dorene enjoys meeting with the ladies, “God’s been putting some amazing people in my life.”  She feels a strong connection with God as she and the others make the Rosaries. She is astounded at how their conversation always centers on Jesus and they never get off topic. Humbly, Dorene say, “I think Mary has a hand in this.”

Dorene’s husband, a very organized military man, encourages her to keep track of how many Rosaries her group makes and who is need of them. Dorene just wants to make the Rosaries. She is not running a business; she is trying to provide people with another way to reach Jesus.  She says, “We’ve always had enough."  Dorene recounts a time when a priest she had never met called for many Rosaries. The priest was preparing to leave on a mission trip when he realized he did not have enough Rosaries.  Dorene was able to meet his needs.  As long as she is doing God’s work, she will let him keep track of how many Rosaries to make and where they need to go.
